March is……..
March 11th, 2010National Poison Prevention Month and National Nutrition Month - AWESOME! You could write a book about all the great poison prevention information out there - but I will keep it a bit more brief…..
Poison Prevention Month has some great information. The most important # you will ever need in this situation is 800-222-1222 use this hot-line to help, it is staffed by nurses, pharmacists, and physicians and is available 24/7. Almost all people who call this hot-line can get the help they need without having to visit a hospital. The calls are free and confidential. 2.5 million poisonings are reported each year to 61 control centers around the country. 90% of all poisonings occur in or around the home and most non-fatal poisonings happen to children under 5 years old. Poison is one of the leading causes of death among adults and is generally caused by pain medications and household cleaners. The best ways to prevent accidental poisonings are; be aware of your surroundings, keep all dangerous products locked up, do not assume you know how to treat an incident - call the hot-line, and and continue to educate on these situations. Most poisonings are accidental and caused by breathing fumes or mixing ingredients that are not meant to be combined, lessen these situations by simply reading labels, know what others around you are working with, and get medical care if needed. Know what you have in your home and keep it safely contained. Every 8 seconds someone calls the Poison Hot-line - Sounds like they are getting the job done!
For National Nutrition Month the American Diabetic Association wants everyone to be informed about making better food choices and developing sound eating and physical fitness habits. As well as a commitment to a healthy and enjoyable way of life. This way of eating, living, and exercising should center around self, family, school, work, supermarket, and friends. The food pyramid has evolved over the years and is an excellent guideline for maintaining all food sources and groups - know what you are putting in your body and that makes it easier in the physical fitness area. Give yourself a good mix of all the food groups, monitor what your children eat, drink plenty of water, and get a fair amount of exercise and you will look and feel better instantly! You are what you eat and the healthier the better!
