Eye Injuries: How to prevent injury to workers?

In spite of statistical proof that protective eyewear prevents injuries, a Bureau of Labor Statistics survey of workers who suffered eye injuries found that nearly 60% were not wearing eye protection at the time of an accident.

Even in workplaces where PPE is mandated, compliance can be a problem. Here are some simple steps to help safety professionals & mangers get increased compliance.

Fogging was number one among vision-related

reasons for PPE non-compliance. Treat glasses with anti-fog wipes, use double pained goggles.

Comfort makes a difference. Provide a varity of safety glasses styles, different nose pieces, length, and size, appeal to differnt people. By providng various styles the range of use stands a good chance of improving. When you provide uncomfortable glasses the risk is greater for non-use.

Proper coverage. Be sure the eyes are properly covered. Over the glasses, sideshields, face shields, these are all products that can add additional coverage and ensure better protection. But,they must be used correctly, and fit properly. OTG (over the glasses) should be large enough to cover prescription glasses. Sideshields should butt up to th side of the lens. Face shields, wear them with the safety glasses for added protection where splash is an issue.
